KILKHAMPTON is a township, parish and village, in the
Eastern division of the county, union and hundred of Stratton,
Holsworthy county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, Cornwall
archdeaconry, and diocese of Exeter, 4 miles north from Stratton, and 20
west from Bideford, on the high road between the two places. The church
of St. James is an ancient building, partly Norman and partly in the
Later English style, with square tower surmounted by pinnacles and
containing 6 bells: the south entrance is a fine specimen of the Norman
style: the carved oak ceiling, oak benches, and granite font are
preserved, and there is a quantity of richly stained glass: here are
several monuments to the Granville family, among which is one to Sir
Beville Granville, who was killed at the battle of Lansdown, near Bath,
1643; there is also a small one to the late Lord Carteret: the floor has
been newly laid with encaustic tiles: this church was the scene of
"Hervey's Meditations among the Tombs." This was the burying
place of the Earls of Bath. The register dates from the year 1539. The
living is a rectory, yearly value £600, in the gift of the Rev. Lord
John Thynne, sub-dean of Westminster, and held by the Rev. Arthur
Christopher Thynne, M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford, prebendary of
Exeter. Here is a National and a Wesleyan school, and places of worship
for Wesleyans and Bible Christians.
Fairs are held on Holy Thursday and third Thursday following, and
26th August. |
The church lands produce £36 10s. The manorial rights
are divided. The Rev. Lord John Thynne is the principal landowner.
Other landowners are Sir George S. Stucley, bart., Mr Broad, Mr W.R.
Parkyn and Mr.T. Ching, besides a few small holdings. Stowe House,
the seat of the Granvilles for upwards of six hundred years, was
pulled down soon after the Restoration, and another afterwards built
on its site by John, Earl of Bath, which was demolished in the same
century. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area
is 8,077 acres (including 195 of water) ; gross estimated rental
£5,162 ; rateable value, £4,570 ; and the population in 1871 was
1,078.
COLLATON, LIMSWORTHY, STIBB, and THURDON are hamlets of this
parish. Parish Clerk Alfred Trewin.
