Vienna

No problem traveling from Budapest to Vienna. Train left Budapest 9.20am (on time) and we arrived at  Westbahnhof Vienna just after noon. Took a taxi to the Hotel Mate Dependance - a little disappointed with the hotel, but having said that it was the cheapest we could find on the net. Our room was clean, large and airy and we couldn't fault the breakfasts. After unpacking it was off to see the sights - and we were not disappointed. We found that it was only a short tram ride into the centre of the City.

We tried to see as much of Vienna as possible in just one and a half days - an impossible task.

I have put down a few tips for anyone visiting Vienna with limited time and the places we found interesting.

  • Tram No1 does a circular route passed lots of places of interest. Inside of the No1 route it is almost all pedestrianised and easy walking with plenty to see.
  •  The roof of Karlskirche Church is under repair this year and it possible to go up by a temperary lift and then by steps right up into the dome to see the  frescos - well worth a visit. ( Small  Charge)
  • The Palace and Gardens of Belvedere is well worth a visit - tram "D" takes you to the top entrance.
  • A 24 hour transport ticket is very good value.

We booked the train to Prague the day before our departure but it was due to leave from Sudbahnhoft,  not Westbahnhof  our arrival station.  We managed to make the transfer from our hotel to the station using public transport.

Only one regret about Vienna  is that we only had one and a half days to see it.   A mental note made to return soon.
